European Ϸվ resolution on the recent poisoning of hundreds of school girls in Iran

Ϸվ,
- having regard to Rule 144 of its Rules of Procedure,
- having regard to its previous resolutions on Iran, in particular those of 17February2022 on the death penalty in Iran and of 6October2022 on the death of Mahsa Jina Amini having regard to the declaration of 25September2022 by the High Representative on Iran,
- having regard to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 1966, which Iran ratified in 1975,
- having regard to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989 (CRC),
- Whereas 5000 schoolchildren, mostly girls, have been affected by poisoning since the end of November,;
- Whereas it takes place at a time when the repression against women who exercise their right of freedom is more severe than ever;
- Whereas the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is urging a transparent investigation into all cases of poisoning in Iranian schools and that the results be made public;
- Whereas Iran's systemic gender discrimination and ongoing assault on academic freedom results in women and girls having fewer opportunities to participate meaningfully in political, cultural and social life;
- Whereas the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in October 2022 condemned the killing and detention of children by the Iranian security forces during its violent crackdown of the protests after the death of Mahsa Jina Amini;
- Whereas on 24 November 2022, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran, particularly with regard to women and children, which establishes an independent international fact-finding mission;
- Condemns this atrocious attempt of silencing women; Urges the United Nations to launch a prompt, transparent, and impartial investigation into these poisonings, for Iran to bring perpetrators to justice based on international standards and ensure the safety of all students;
- Strongly deplores the Iranian government’s long history of disregard for the basic human rights of Iranian citizens, especially women and the violation of the CRC;
- Reiterates its condemnation of the widespread and disproportionate use of force by the Iranian government against peaceful demonstrations and its treatment of child protesters;
- Condemns the arbitrary arrest of Ali Pour Tabatabei, the journalist who first covered the poisoning starting in Qom and urges his immediate release;
- Expresses its full support to the Iranian youth and especially the young women leading and participating in the protests despite ongoing police violence and brutal repression;
- Reiterates its call to the Council to designate the IRGC to the EU Terrorist List;
- Urges the Council to make available humanitarian visa’s for women and girls from Iran;
- Calls again on the Council to consider further targeted sanctions through the Magnitsky Act;
- Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the HR/VP, and to the Supreme Leader of Iran, the President and the Members of the Iranian Majles;
