听听President. 鈥� On 30听August 2024, a call for nominations with a view to the election of the European Ombudsman was published in the Official Journal. The closing date for submitting nominations is 30听September 2024.

On 2听September, you received an email from me with further information on the procedure, including the standardised form for supporting signatures. I would like to recall you that, pursuant to Rule听237(2) of our Rules of Procedure, each nomination has to have the support of at least 39听Members who are nationals of at least two Member States.

Each Member may support only one nomination. If you support more than one nomination, your signature will not be considered for any of the nominations in question. Also, your support will only be valid if indicated on the standardised form within the time limit for the submission of nominations. Once a nomination has been submitted, additional signatures will no longer be accepted. However, you may withdraw your signature by notifying me before the end of the time limit for nominations.

I will then transmit nominations that meet all the criteria to the Committee on Petitions, which will hold hearings of the nominees at the beginning of December. These hearings will be open to all Members. The election of the new Ombudsman in plenary will then take place during the December 2024 part-session.

They both started the bloodiest World War Two. Unfortunately, this is not yet history: Russia's war of aggression today is a direct continuation of the war 85听years ago.

Germany has passed the test of history; the crimes of the Nazis have been condemned and evaluated, and that is why today we have a project of peace 鈥� the European Union. However, the crimes of Communism have not received international condemnation, and so we see a resurrection of totalitarianism: Putinism, which is like two in one 鈥� Hitler and Stalin.

Russia uses historical disinformation as a weapon against Ukraine and us, against Europe. Let us not be fooled: this war is not just a conflict in the margins of eastern Europe; it is an existential war for Europe that must end with the full defeat of Putinism, just as it ended for Nazism nearly 80 years ago. This would not only protect Europe, but also bring a possibility of change to Russia.听I am grateful to all who understand this, and especially to Ukraine, which has stood up to defend all of Europe. Don't forget: our history is our future.

听听Assita Kanko (ECR). 鈥� Madam President, dear colleagues, I would like you 鈥� I would like all of us Europeans 鈥� to hear this name: Rebecca Cheptegei. Rebecca Cheptegei was a runner from Uganda. She was one of the best in the world. She ran the marathon at the Olympic Games in Paris; held the Olympic spirit high. She was also an independent woman, and for that she was murdered: burned alive by her former partner in Kenya.

Rebecca Cheptegei was someone's daughter, sister, mother. She was an athlete. With her death, it's part of the Olympic flame that went off. Her death is a painful reminder that the fight for women's rights is nowhere over 鈥� not in Africa, not in Europe. We owe it to our daughters to fight for their rights, for their safety, for their place in society. Together, we must make the homes and streets of the world become better places, safer places for everyone, our daughters included. For that, we still have a lot of work to do. We owe it to them. We owe it to Rebecca Cheptegei. Let's commit to that.

N茫o queria deixar passar esta oportunidade sem dar uma palavra a todas as v铆timas e, em particular, aos bombeiros que, com a coragem e com a bravura que lhes conhecemos, est茫o neste momento na linha da frente a socorrer aqueles que mais precisam.

Para finalizar, apelo para que, uma vez mais, continuemos o caminho de refor莽o do Mecanismo Europeu de Prote莽茫o Civil, que tantas vidas tem salvado e que, 脿 imagem e semelhan莽a daquilo que vivemos durante a pandemia de Covid-19, pode continuar a dar resposta a estas emerg锚ncias.
