听听President. 鈥� The next item is the debate on the statement by the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on the crackdown on peaceful pro-European demonstrators in Georgia ().

The unprecedented protests followed the announcement by the Georgian authorities of their decision not to seek the opening of accession negotiations until 2028.

This step is a clear shift from the policies of previous Georgian governments and the aspirations of the vast majority of the population. It is also the first time ever we see a country that was granted candidate status immediately and markedly shifting away from its European path.

The situation in Georgia keeps deteriorating. Over the past two weeks, more than 450 individuals have been detained. Around 300 have reportedly suffered violence and ill treatment, many requiring urgent medical care. The police charged over 400 individuals with administrative and over 30 with criminal offences, while no one from the law enforcement or informal violent groups has been held accountable for the excessive use of force.

These events are not isolated incidents, but part of a broader pattern of Georgia's democratic decline. Prior to the parliamentary elections on 26听October, that were marked by serious irregularities, the authorities adopted the foreign influence law and so-called family values legislative package.听Both these legislative initiatives go against European norms and values.

In June, we responded by adopting a number of measures, including downgrading political contacts and suspension of assistance: EUR听30听million under European Peace Facility assistance and EUR听121听million in direct assistance to the government.听Georgia's accession process has been effectively halted. The authorities have not reversed their course of action.

Honourable Members, it was time for the European Union to react in a decisive and unified manner. This is what the Georgian people expect us to do. Those responsible for the violence need to be held accountable, and the authorities need to take urgent steps to stop the repression, release the protesters arbitrarily detained and re-engage in the accession process.

Yesterday, at the Foreign Affairs Council, we agreed to halt the visa-free regime for diplomatic and service passport holders. We also discussed sanctioning under the European Union Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime those Georgian officials responsible for, involved in or associated with serious human rights violations.

At the same time, we will continue to stand with the Georgian people, including by redirecting funding away from the authorities towards the civil society and towards independent media so they can continue their work during this crucial period.

听听Rasa Juknevi膷ien臈, on behalf of the PPE Group. 鈥� Mr听President, Sakartvelo's President Salome Zurabishvili, the leader of European Georgia, is now on her way to Strasbourg to address us at the heart of the EU democracy.

'Is there any hope?' is the most frequent question about Georgia for me in Lithuania. Yes, there is. When I was in Tbilisi last week, I saw hopeful people with European Union flags. They are raising those flags not just in the capital, but all over the country, in small villages, including 500 detained, hundreds beaten, tortured, including journalists. But more and more people are coming to the demonstrations.

Georgia is becoming a textbook case of how Russian influence can transform a democratic system into an authoritarian regime without firing a shot. But Georgia is an EU candidate. The EU institutions cannot therefore be left behind.

The position of my group, the EPP, is clear: the parliamentary elections were stolen. We see no other way to help Georgia than new elections. Salome Zurabishvili is the only president legitimately elected by the people until the new elections are held. We call on Member States to implement sanctions on individuals responsible for rigged elections and violence against peaceful protesters. We urge Heads of States and ministers of Member States not to wait to go to Tbilisi on a European Georgia mission, our Commission included.

I urge the EU to take the lead and not let Putin and his proxies win the battle against freedom and democracy on the European continent. It is the same battle for real peace and freedom that the Ukrainians are fighting for.

听听Tobias Cremer, on behalf of the S&D Group. 鈥� Mr听President, dear colleagues, I, too, just got back from Tbilisi, and what I saw there was honestly bone-chilling: a government that, after rigging the elections, is cracking down on its own population and trying to turn a European democracy into a Belarusian-style authoritarian regime under the shadow of the Kremlin. It is a Russian playbook, all too familiar by now 鈥� a playbook of disinformation, manipulation, intimidation, violence and even torture.

But, colleagues, what I saw in Georgia also gave me hope. Hope because tens 鈥� perhaps hundreds 鈥� of thousands of Georgians are taking to the streets every day and every night right now, across the country, in the cities, in the villages. Georgians are fighting for their country. They are fighting for their democracy. They are fighting for their freedom.

These people are fighting in Georgia. But they do so under a blue banner with golden stars. The banner of Europe is for Georgians the banner of freedom, and Georgians are risking their lives for this blue banner. Wherever we went as MEPs, people came up to us waving this European banner, cheering us, but also asking us, 'Where is Europe in this hour of truth?'

Colleagues, the eyes of the Georgians are on us right now, and not just of the Georgians 鈥� also Ukrainians, Moldovans and so many others who yearn for freedom. They are looking to us here in Strasbourg right now. So let us show to them that in the hour of need, Europe is capable of acting.

Let us impose impose real sanctions on those suppressing their own population. Let us welcome here on this floor President Salome Zourabichvili to address the Plenary. And let us support the Georgian people in their wish for new and fair elections on their path to Europe, on their path to freedom.

Georgians are acting right now to defend the values that this banner represents. So let us do the same.

The leaders of this nightmare stole the people's voice in an election that was not free nor fair. And by blocking the roads to the EU, they stole the people's hope. They are illegitimate, unconstitutional, but the masks are off and they reveal their true face 鈥� a face the Georgian people know too well, a face of Russian oppression. Peaceful protesters arrested; hundreds assaulted by the police; civil society intimidated; journalists hunted and beaten; political opponents imprisoned, like Nika Gvaramia, who we met here in the European 合法博彩网站 just three weeks ago.

Yet the Georgian people don't flinch: 7% of the population protests daily in the freezing cold. Students, civil servants, winemakers, lawyers, ravers, mothers, grandparents gathering from Tbilisi Square to the mountains of Svaneti and farmlands of Kakheti. I walked with these protesters last Thursday. They demand new elections. A year ago, Georgia received EU candidate status not because of its government, but because of its people. And those people look at us for action. So how can we help?

The sanctioned leaders of Georgian dreams 鈥� all they care about is their wealth. Fund independent media and other defenders for democracy, and support Salome Zurabishvili, the people's president, the only legitimate leader, also after 29听December.

As one of the protesters told me, the real dream of Georgia is European.

Sie tut dies deshalb, weil sich in Georgien politische Kr盲fte durchgesetzt haben, die nicht die Br眉sseler Agenda teilen: Christliche Werte statt Wokeness, Nationalstolz statt Nationalmasochismus, Souver盲nit盲t statt Westbindung. Mittlerweile findet in nahezu jeder Plenarsitzung im Europ盲ischen Parlament eine Aussprache zur Lage in Georgien statt. An konstruktiven diplomatischen Beziehungen zu Georgien besteht seitens der EU keinerlei Interesse. Sie unterst眉tzt einen Staatsstreich in Tiflis, der an den Euromaidan in der Ukraine erinnert: Aufgestachelte Demonstranten und Agents Provocateurs, vom Ausland finanzierte NGOs, Massenprotest auf den Stra脽en. Das Ergebnis ist bekannt听鈥� es ist kein gutes.

Die Mehrheit der Georgier lehnt dies aus nachvollziehbaren Gr眉nden ab: Sie wollen nicht, dass Georgien zu einer zweiten Ukraine wird. Sie wollen keine Fremdeinmischung听鈥� weder aus Moskau, noch aus Br眉ssel oder Washington. Wir sollten ihren Willen, auch im eigenen Interesse, respektieren.

This is not the behaviour of a government serious about its European ambitions. The surge in anti-Ukrainian propaganda, attacks on civil society and violent crackdowns betray the will of the Georgian people, who overwhelmingly support a future in Europe.

The EU cannot turn a blind eye. Those responsible for these actions must be held to account, and our support for Georgia鈥檚 democratic forces strengthened. Let us be clear: the Georgian Government has already set itself on an authoritarian course, one that is difficult to reverse. This path risks isolating Georgia from its rightful place in the European family and betrays the aspirations of its people.
