Transatlantic relations are based on common values and shared interests, and their strengthening should be in our mutual interest.

Yesterday, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States. I will address a few critical policies for the EU.

There was much talk during the US election campaign of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. This is an existential issue for the EU, but not only for us: Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is a challenge for the international rules鈥慴ased order and a global concern. The EU, the US and other like鈥憁inded partners have been supporting Ukraine politically, militarily and financially since Russia started its war of aggression. We have imposed massive and unprecedented sanctions against Russia. The EU and the US are currently providing the largest share of support to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. As President Trump takes office, our focus is on remaining steadfast and united in this support. It is essential that we continue to support Ukraine as it exercises its inherent right to self-defence against Russia's aggression, in line with the principles of the UN Charter. The EU is committed to supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes and as intensively as needed.

The US President has said he aims to end this war quickly. We agree: no one wants peace more than Ukraine and the EU. But our objective is a comprehensive, just and lasting peace. To achieve this, Ukraine must be involved. There can be no discussion about Ukraine without Ukraine. We therefore look forward to working closely with the new administration on Ukraine so that Russia will not prevail.

The transatlantic partnership is also of crucial importance for trade. The European Union and the US are both each other's largest trading partner. Our partnership is a long鈥憇tanding source of prosperity and jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. We have a shared interest in strengthening our trade and investment relations. The EU is ready to work with the new US administration. We will do this through open dialogue, seeking to prevent trade tensions while protecting our legitimate interests.

Like other US Presidents, President Trump has asked Europe to take more responsibility for its defence and security. The EU and the United States are indeed key partners in this field. It is essential for us to invest more in our security. EU Member States have already considerably increased their defence spending, in particular since 2022, when Russia started its war of aggression against Ukraine. There has been a 30听% increase between 2021 and 2024, and defence expenditures will continue growing in the future. The EU's efforts on security and defence are complementary with NATO and will reinforce transatlantic cooperation. We look forward to working with the new administration to strengthen Europe's security.

But security is not only about defence. Europe's energy security has come into the spotlight since Russia started its war of aggression against Ukraine. Since then, the EU has cut down on Russian oil and gas supplies to Europe. In fact, we have increasingly substituted Russian gas imports with LNG, US and other partners. This has helped us to curtail Russia's revenues and at the same time boost transatlantic energy trade. The US remains the EU's largest supplier of LNG, and the EU remains the largest client for the United States. At the same time, diversification is crucial to ensure energy security. The EU and the US are strategic partners on global energy security, and we are ready to discuss energy issues with the new administration.

The EU is committed to safeguarding the democratic values and freedoms of its citizens, including freedom of speech. The EU will continue to use its tools and mechanisms to protect and promote human rights, rule of law and democratic principles, both at home and globally.

Madam听President, honourable Members, Commissioner, changes are unfolding in Washington. We hope to launch a constructive exchange with the new administration to fully clarify the intention of our American partners on all topics that concern us. We have learned from history that Europe and the US are stronger together. We should now reflect collectively on how we can effectively uphold these partnerships in new circumstances, and that requires EU unity. EU Foreign Affairs Ministers will discuss transatlantic relations at the next meeting on 27听January, and shortly after, on 3听February, EU leaders will continue the exchange at the retreat, which focuses on defence and security. Thank you very much for your attention.

This includes upholding the sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders. We will maintain our unwavering commitment to Ukraine, providing sustained political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support for as long as it takes. We will support achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.

The EU also remains fully committed to safeguarding the democratic values and freedoms of its citizens, especially the freedom of speech and the integrity of electoral processes. We will remain focused on our pressing challenges: strengthening our economy, fostering innovation and promoting competitiveness will remain key priorities. This includes being consistent and supportive when it comes to clean and digital technologies, like batteries and related newly grown industries.

Honourable Members, we take note of the memorandum on an 'America First' trade policy, adopted yesterday by the US President, Donald Trump. The transatlantic trade and investment relationship is a key artery of the global economy. No other economies in the world are as integrated as we are. Entire supply chains stretch on both sides of the Atlantic. The EU and the US have the largest bilateral trade and investment relationship in the world, supporting more than 16 million jobs and accounting for 42听% of global GDP. In 2023 alone, bilateral trade flows reached EUR听1.6 trillion: EUR听807听billion听in terms of trade in goods, and EUR听680 billion of trade in services. More than 4 billion of goods and services cross the Atlantic every day. European companies in the US employ 3.5 million Americans, and another million American jobs depend directly on trade with Europe. Equally, our bilateral investment flows are unrivalled. The EU and US have more than EUR听5 trillion invested in their respective economies, and of all American assets abroad, two thirds are in Europe. The EU wants to leverage this robust relationship to enhance growth, maintain technological leadership and boost resilient supply chains. It would no doubt be advantageous for the EU and the US to work together across the board.

So we will continue to be a strong partner, ready to engage and cooperate as a matter of priority and pursue a positive agenda with the US discussing common interests, and stand ready to negotiate. We will be pragmatic. But the EU will also stand by its principles and will be prepared to defend its legitimate interests, if this is necessary.

We take note of today's decision by the new US administration regarding energy production and exports. The EU is already the largest importer of US liquefied natural gas, providing over 50听% of our LNG, and the Commission is ready to work with the new administration to further strengthen the strategic cooperation as we work to strengthen our own energy security. The EU regrets the decision by the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, which we believe continues to be the best hope for us all. For more than a decade, we have worked side by side with our American friends to design and implement the Paris Agreement. Companies in both Europe and America are investing in climate action, in clean technologies, and in bringing their benefits to the citizens. So Europe will stay the course and work to ensure that this continues both at home 鈥� for example, through the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal 鈥� and abroad, with all nations that want to protect nature and stop global warming. The EU looks forward to working closely with the new US administration to tackle pressing global challenges. A lot is at stake for both sides, more so as the rules of engagement between global powers are changing. We will address shared priorities for prosperity and international security, reaffirming the enduring strength of the transatlantic partnership.

Dat is voor ons een rode lijn, want,听en waarschijnlijk tot grote spijt van extreem rechts in dit halfrond, de toekomst van Europa is niet Amerikaans, niet Russisch en ook niet Chinees. De toekomst van Europa is Europees en het is het beste dat we dat lot in eigen handen nemen.

Ovviamente, da conservatori, non possiamo che apprezzare Trump che vuole contrastare il crimine, i cartelli del narcotraffico e l'immigrazione irregolare, quello che pone fine all'egemonia听woke, demolisce le teorie gender e ripristina la libert脿 di espressione sui social media.

Ci attendiamo molto sul Medio Oriente, dove 猫 necessario ripartire dallo spirito degli accordi di Abramo, e sull'Ucraina, dove dobbiamo costruire una pace giusta, in primo luogo per gli aggrediti.

Sulla NATO, Trump ci richiama alle nostre responsabilit脿, dopo decenni in cui abbiamo appaltato, a basso costo, la difesa della nostra sicurezza. Su Groenlandia e Panama pone temi che riguardano anche la nostra sicurezza: l'attivismo russo-cinese nell'Artico e il controllo di Pechino sulle infrastrutture strategiche.

Ecco quindi che la presidenza Trump ci offre soprattutto la grande occasione di riallineare le nostre scelte industriali verso l'Atlantico, anzich茅 consegnarci mani e piedi alla Cina con le follie ideologiche che hanno inquinato il Green Deal, con buona pace della tanto declamata autonomia strategica. Ci offre la grande occasione di rilanciare una forte partnership transatlantica, anzich茅 tremare in attesa di nuovi dazi.

Una cosa 猫 certa, colleghi: ieri 猫 nata una nuova America, ora 猫 tempo che nasca una nuova Europa.

Les entreprises am茅ricaines, elles, ont besoin de notre march茅. Alors, est-ce que Donald Trump va aller expliquer aux entreprises am茅ricaines qu鈥檈lles ne pourront plus acc茅der 脿 notre march茅 aux m锚mes conditions parce qu鈥檌l aura mis des droits de douane sur les produits europ茅ens? C鈥檈st r茅duire tous les autres au silence: les mod茅r茅s, les minorit茅s, la tr猫s grande majorit茅 des gens qui, eux, a respectent les autres. Que devient a elle alors, leur libert茅 脿 eux? Avec Renew Europe, nous exigeons de la Commission qu鈥檈lle applique les sanctions qui s鈥檌mposeront 脿 X.

脌 quoi 莽a sert, Monsieur le Commissaire 鈥撎齤e vous le demande听鈥�, de voter des lois ici, dans ce Parlement, si la Commission ne veille pas 脿 leur application? Nous devons aussi d茅fendre notre 茅tat de droit et nos valeurs. Musk, Trump et tous leurs partisans, y compris en Europe, ont un programme id茅ologique. Ils veulent saper nos d茅mocraties. C鈥檈st donc aussi un combat politique et id茅ologique que nous devons mener.

We understand clearly that now is Europe's moment to shine. With Trump as president, we don't have a choice but to mature into a united global power that is self鈥慶onscious, value鈥慸riven and cooperative. A union of democracies that take responsibility. Many Europeans understand it, but they question, can we make it? Yes, we can. We can stand for Ukraine forcefully and build our own defence with our American friends and, if necessary, also without. Yes, we can! We can serve as an example that trade is the answer to wars and cooperation is the only answer to nationalism. Yes we can! It's not going to be an easy path towards Europe that is confident and capable, but we shall walk it together, and together we trust. Because yes, we can. And now we must.

I visited 13 states and 7听000 kilometres. All the people have moved out of cities riddled with crime and drugs that are being imported from Mexico and through unstable borders. These are the facts that American citizens voted on, not on Trump personalities.

Europe faces tectonic shifts ahead, and we must act decisively. As we anticipate President Trump's next moves in trade, we must simultaneously strengthen our trade partnerships worldwide and enhance our competitiveness. It is possible to make both Europe and America great, but only if we work together. We need to strengthen our diplomatic channels with the new administration, while advocating for European producers and understanding the American business model.

In the past, we failed to fully grasp the reality of the United States of America beyond Washington. Let us ensure we do not repeat that mistake in our engagement with the new administration.

This is a moment when Europe must act with clarity, pragmatism and determination to strengthen our transatlantic partnership and shape the next four years. EU鈥慤S relations have been the cornerstone of Western security and stability for decades. NATO has guaranteed us peace and commercial ties with the US have driven prosperity. Both of these elements are the bedrock of our shared strength.

This is why I must express my deep disappointment with Prime Minister Donald Tusk's decision not to organise the transatlantic summit that President Andrzej Duda had strongly advocated for. In the current situation, this is a grave mistake with potentially significant consequences at a time when some EU governments still question how they should react to President Trump's electoral victory I cannot stress enough that Europe cannot afford to remain passive.

In parallel, the EU must also prepare to invest more in our own interests. We should pursue more robust defence coordination within the EU, without duplicating NATO structures, and work proactively with Washington to bolster deterrence on our eastern flank. This House must seize this change in the White House as an opportunity to deepen our dialogue with the Trump administration.

We need to maintain dialogue. There is no point in us being ideologically opposed to the fact that the American people have elected Donald Trump as their president. Both on the left and the right, we need to temper our language to ensure that Europe continues to dialogue with its most important strategic partner.

European companies provide huge employment opportunities right across Europe, and we have to ensure that we maintain and protect that, so the areas of tax and trade are of significant importance. American troops died on this continent twice over the last 110 years to save ourselves from ourselves, so it is critically important from a security perspective as well.

And sometimes, on the right, I hear people championing Trump, but equally, I'd like them to stand in front of their own citizens and say that in the event of Trump withdrawing from NATO, either directly or funding, taxes in their countries will go up, the threat to their countries will increase. So very clearly, those that do trumpet Trump should also be very conscious of the potential consequences of President Trump if he does renege on his security commitments to date in the areas of NATO funding directly, and also military support.

Sappiamo che tribunali e Congresso potrebbero limitare queste sue decisioni, ma il messaggio politico 猫 chiaro: valori come il rispetto dei diritti umani e della democrazia sono in pericolo. Se non reagiremo, ora e con forza, accetteremo anni di irrilevanza e permetteremo che siano altri a scrivere la storia, tradendo ci貌 che siamo e ci貌 che rappresentiamo.

He threatens to impose tariffs on EU products. He demands that we buy weapons from the US for hundreds of billions, even though the majority of our defence spending already goes to the US.

The techno鈥憃ligarchs who fund Trump demand that we accept brainwashing on their platforms. The extreme right in this parliament is destroying Europe from within to support Trump, Musk and Putin.

We must not surrender! We have to become independent. Let's move away from dirty fuels. Let's stop supporting the US arms industry and let us take care of our own economy, human rights and democracy!

Estos logros dejan en evidencia a una izquierda cuyos argumentos ya conocemos y nos fuerzan a elegir qu茅 rumbo tomar: o bien aprovechamos todo aquello que nos une con nuestro aliado del otro lado del Atl谩ntico, o bien nos encerramos en nosotros mismos y nos lamentamos, mientras los Estados Unidos y China nos dejan atr谩s de forma definitiva. His policies have external ramifications, from tariffs to Paris Treaty. He will significantly increase US defence spending and promote US exceptionalism without hesitance. He promised American revival and primacy. His method echoes previous US presidents: if you have a big enough stick, you will be heard even when you speak softly.

Unfortunately, Europe lacks such power. Our defence spending still lacks and is insufficiently used. Aid for Ukraine has to continue, even when the US withdraws from it, for the next three months, if necessary, alone. Without that strength, our voices go unheard. No matter how loudly we yell, the rest of the world only yawns. Now we need to alter our approach radically. Our policies need to prioritise European geostrategic interests.

Voorzitter,听Amerika is 鈥� geloof het of niet 鈥� gelukkig meer dan alleen Trump. Een aantal jaren geleden, toen Amerika uit het Akkoord van Parijs stapte, besloten bedrijven en ook heel veel staten om er gewoon mee door te gaan. De wil van Trump lijkt echter steeds meer wet; te veel mensen volgen blind, ook hier.

We hebben belang bij een sterke relatie met de VS en dat belang moet ons blijven leiden. Maar "America first" betekent nog niet听dat Europa "second" is. Hooguit als we de belangen van Trump en zijn techgiganten dienen.

Het roekeloze beleid van Trump brengt onzekerheid met zich mee. Komen er tarieven? Blijft er vraag naar onze producten? Kunnen onze afnemers nog wel zakendoen in de VS? Delen we onze grondstoffen of gaan we erom vechten? De prijskaartjes in onze schappen zullen in ieder geval stijgen door Trumps tarieventumult, en de inflatie zal stijgen. Ik hoop dat het meevalt, maar er is reden genoeg om minder afhankelijk te zijn en ons sterker te verenigen dan ooit. Dat is het antwoord op Trump, want "America first" mag en kan niet betekenen dat de rest van ons gaat stikken.

听听Gerolf Annemans (PfE). 鈥� Voorzitter,听Ik zou wensen dat ik de vele panikerende linkse en links-liberale en de vele mondialistische en multilateralistische collega鈥檚 hier in het halfrond enigszins zou kunnen troosten. Met het aantreden van Donald Trump in Washington komt er geen einde aan de democratie. Integendeel: het is een viering, zeg maar een feest, van de democratie.

Wat wel een probleem is, is de reputatie van de Europese Unie in het Washington van vandaag. Mijns inziens terecht wordt de Europese Unie bij de machthebbers in de Verenigde Staten beschouwd als een centralistisch geleide planeconomie met veel te veel regels, veel te veel rigiditeit, te weinig marge voor dealmaking en negotiating. En bovenop dat alles nog eens een enorm dwangmatige linkse neiging tot inperking van de vrijheid van meningsuiting.

De Europese Unie van vandaag staat haaks op de nieuwe tijd die gisteren aan de andere kant van de Atlantische Oceaan van start is gegaan. Een nieuwe tijd waarin de multilateralistische Europese Unie in grote mate een handicap zal zijn voor de performante lidstaten in Europa. Wij, Patriotten voor Europa, willen aansluiten bij die nieuwe tijd. Een nieuwe patriottische tijd, waarvan wij hopen dat die snel in de komende jaren ook hier in Europa, lidstaat na lidstaat, verkiezing na verkiezing, zal arriveren. De dag van gisteren is dus een dag van hoop.

During his first term, Trump clearly stated that other NATO members must also invest in their defence. Then he was criticised. Now we have painfully realised that we do not have the resources even to help Ukraine to win a war. And if even the war in Ukraine did not make some countries think about investing in defence, maybe Trump will.

Like a Trump in the EU, we see that the ideology-based green policy harmed the competitiveness of EU industry, and CO2 emissions in the world even increased. Perhaps now we will understand that at a time when floods and fires are already happening, we need to stop living in fantasies and start caring about adaptation and survival.

I hope we will also return to common sense when we talk about the end of the gender ideology and cancel culture. As Europe freezes in demographic winter, waking up to biological reality and ending the brainwashing of our children could be a good start.

They're saying it's amazing that we have this expansionist person now there, but then I hear a Danish far-right guy saying: 'Yeah, but maybe don't take Greenland. You know, that's not so good.' So when it goes against your own interest, then suddenly you realise that maybe if there's an expansionist on the other side, it's not so good to be a patriot and in favour of that.

There are three main implications of Trump taking power. The first one is about the economy, the second one is about security, and the third one is about democracy. When it comes to economy, we need to work closer together. We need to go into free trade agreements to diversify trade. We need to really unleash innovation in Europe and build the interior market.

When it comes to security, we need to understand that 17 different tank systems for the same category in Europe doesn't make sense. We need to be able to support Ukraine and defend ourselves.

And when it comes to democracy, I can only ask all citizens of the European Union to get active in politics now, because we really need you in the centre and not in these false patriotic parties.

Trump voert een agressieve strijd en sleept de rest van de wereld mee in zijn koude oorlog. Zijn tarieven raken niet alleen Chinese en Canadese goederen, maar ook de Europese industrie. Onze toekomst staat hiermee op het spel. Dit is geen economische bescherming. Dit zijn de laatste stuiptrekkingen van een systeem in verval, het kapitalisme. Maar verandering ligt gelukkig in onze handen. De wereld verandert en het is aan ons om te vechten voor fair听trade, een eerlijker socialistisch perspectief. Dus geen Trump鈥憈arieven, geen economische chantage. Samen en vastberaden zeggen wij keihard: No way, we won鈥檛 pay!

Das laute Schweigen der EU鈥慘ommission in den letzten Wochen war wirklich zu laut, sehr geehrte Damen und Herren!

Y desde el punto de vista internacional, tambi茅n va a suponer un cambio, un punto de inflexi贸n. Hay gente que habla, incluso, de un acelerador de la historia. Pero aqu铆 Europa tiene que ser capaz de ayudar a que sus principios y sus convicciones se reflejen en el orden internacional. Es decir, no podemos ser los sufridores del nuevo orden internacional, sino conformarlo. Y para eso tenemos que actuar con unidad, con decisi贸n y con fortaleza, y no permitir que desde los Estados Unidos se nos separe, ni permitir las relaciones bilaterales, sino con el conjunto de la Uni贸n Europea como actor fundamental para la paz y para la estabilidad.

Our most pressing task is to unite and strengthen the European Union, while maintaining strong partnership with like-minded globally, and of course, it also includes the US, as, for example, the Democrats. Trump was indeed democratically elected, but acts like an autocrat.

Jasno je da ne mo啪emo biti konkurentni u svim sektorima, ali biotehnolo拧ki sektor, pra膰en istra啪ivanjem i inovacijama, proizvodnja hrane i vojna industrija moraju biti prepoznati kao strate拧ki.

Naravno, na拧i se poduzetnici te拧ko mogu natjecati na globalnom tr啪i拧tu dok pla膰aju vi拧estruku cijenu energenata u odnosu na prekooceanske konkurente. Zato energetska suverenost treba biti apsolutni prioritet, a to podrazumijeva 拧iroki energetski miks koji uklju膷uje i nuklearnu energiju, vodik, ali i zajedni膷ku nabavu energenata radi postizanja povoljnije nabavne cijene.

Dame i gospodo, vrijeme je da i mi europske interese u膷inimo prioritetom, a ne ljevi膷arske utopije.

Dice che i cittadini americani potranno comprare l'auto che vogliono: cosa giusta, ma gli europei no, perch茅 qua continuate con l'obbligo dell'auto elettrica dal 2035.

Insomma, da una parte la rivoluzione di Trump, dall'altra un imbarazzante immobilismo.

听听Grzegorz Braun (NI). 鈥� Mr听President, it really is very pathetic and embarrassing: Mr Trump didn't spare a word yesterday to even mention Europe, and here we are now debating for hours, part of you expressing their frustration, anger and hatred, the other part expressing their gratitude and best hopes.

To both sides, bad news: no cavalry is coming to save us. Even if it's coming, then it might be not for our salvation. We just have to judge and decide by ourselves.

And the question is, will Europe remain the side of mass-experimenting on humans and nations or not? Whether we will reject leftist, un-human policies as Mr Donald Trump does in his country, in his state or not. And this debate will not change the course of this ...

听听Maro拧 艩ef膷ovi膷, Member of the Commission. 鈥� Mr听President, honourable Members of the European 合法博彩网站, dear Minister, first and foremost, I would like to thank you for this very important debate which highlighted the unparalleled political, economic and security importance of the transatlantic relationship. I appreciate your calls for constructive and early engagement with our American partners. We are prepared for the negotiations and we are ready to engage. I am convinced that among the two closest, strategic and biggest trade partners, there are no issues which cannot be resolved amicably and through cooperation. That is what we offer. That's what we propose. And as INTA Chair Mr听Lange said, let's use negotiations to build a stable relationship with the new US administration.

Several honourable Members 鈥� Mr听Szczerba, Madam听Wilmes, Mr听Kols, Madam听Jalloul Muro and, I think, the last one,听Madam听Wcis艂o 鈥� highlighted many European strengths. The biggest one of them was clearly described as our unity 鈥� the unity of our Member States, the unity of our institutions, and strong public support for our approach. We all know very well that when Europe is united, it gets things done. We in the European Commission are committed to working as closely as possible to consolidate our European unity and, of course, when necessary we are prepared to defend European interests and uphold our values, because that's the European way.

Mr听Vondra, Mr听McAllister and several others were asking about policy responses to this new situation, driven by听hyper鈥慶ompetition in the world. The European Commission is working very hard to present to you very soon the new roadmap on how to increase our productivity, how to close the innovation gap. We are working on a Clean Industrial Deal. We want to advance and accelerate work on the Capital Markets Union, and we will also deliver on our commitment to present to you a competitiveness compass as well as a very solid package on cutting red tape, as suggested by Mr听Ferber.

At this moment, we are intensely consulting key stakeholders in key sectors of our economy like steel, aluminium, mobility and cars to make sure that we are up to the requirements of this new age. On top of all this, we are reviewing our toolbox for beefing up the EU's economic security, as suggested by Chair Lalucq.

Madame听Van Brempt was calling for closer cooperation with like鈥憁inded partners, and I can confirm that the new geoeconomics are opening new trade opportunities for the European Union with partners who see us as fair, predictable and, of course, the biggest trading bloc in the world. In the last two months, we concluded important trade negotiations with Mercosur, Switzerland and Mexico. We significantly accelerated our talks with India, Malaysia and Indonesia, and we are pursuing with new momentum negotiations with several partners in Southeast Asia and Africa. This is the best proof that there is a huge appetite for free and fair trade, and the European Union will remain its champion, its promoter, and will continue to push for a rules鈥慴ased order, be it for international or trade relations.

So, Mr听President, honourable Members, we are open for fair business and we are open for constructive talks. Thank you very much.

We are committed to working towards a positive agenda with the US. The world needs the US and the EU working together to promote our values and strategic aims.

I am sure that transatlantic relations will remain a major topic of political discussion for the foreseeable future, and that is why debates like this are both timely and relevant, also having in mind that our priorities are security and competitiveness.

But I would like to underline that the most important is to keep European unity.
