Highlights

The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development will vote on the modification of customs duties applicable to imports of certain goods originating in or exported directly or indirectly from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, on 5 May. AGRI Committee will also discuss a legislative proposal about strengthening the position of farmers in the food supply chain.

The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development will vote on the non-legislative draft report on the future of agriculture and the post-2027 common agricultural policy, on 8 April. AGRI members will also discuss the global challenges related to food security, sustainable agriculture and natural resource management with Maurizio Martina, Deputy Director-General of the FAO. The AGRI Committee will then debate on the EU wine legislation with the Commission.

The EPRS will present to TRAN and AGRI Members the study on animal welfare during transport, up-date on the implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 . A discussion will follow under the Joint committee procedure. This is part of the preparation of the AGRI-TRAN joint report on the matter.

The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development will discuss the Commission Work Programme with Commissioners Christophe Hansen, responsible for Agriculture and Food, and Olivér Várhelyi, responsible for Health and Animal Welfare, on 8 April. The exchanges are organised to discuss the state of implementation of the current Commission Work Programme (CWP) as well as the priorities to be reflected in the CWP for the next year.

The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development will vote on opinions on a revamped long-term EU budget and the Water Resilience Strategy, on 27 March. AGRI committee members will also discuss with the Commission a recent paper of the European Environment Agency, which addresses the issue of exposure to mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are toxins from fungi that contaminate crops, food and feed.

The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development holds a hearing on “The actors in the agricultural supply chain and their role in price formation: problems and perspectives”, on 27 March. This hearing aims to foster a comprehensive discussion on the current price formation mechanisms and to identify the best strategies to protect farmers against unfair trading practices in the price formation.
