On 12 May, Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner for Equality, preparedness and crisis management, brought more clarity on the Commission’s intentions and explore concrete steps forward.

In its 2025 Work Programme, the European Commission has listed the among the files to be withdrawn. Despite ongoing negotiations in the Council and significant progress made under the Belgian Presidency, Member States have failed to reach the necessary unanimity, leaving the proposal stalled since 2008.

The LIBE Committee has emphasized the importance of the proposal as a key piece of legislation that would address critical gaps in the European anti-discrimination law. The Ϸվ, the Council, and the Commission should continue their collaborative efforts to break the impasse. The discussion with Commissioner Lahbib aimed at strengthening legislative efforts and ensuring comprehensive protections for all EU citizens.
