Legal protection and support of orphans - workshop

On Wednesday, 19 July 2023, the FEMM Committee will hold a workshop on “Legal protection and support of orphans of gender-based violence victims”, organised by the Policy Departement on Citizen’s Rights and Constitutional Affairs.
Violence against women and girls is a widespread phenomenon in the EU and globally. In 2020 the global estimation of femicide shows that 47 000 women were killed worldwide and around 2600 in Europe. However, the number of victims is in fact much higher, because orphaned children are rarely considered as direct victims. EIGE notes that there are legal gaps in tackling femicide and that the existing measures to protect children who witnessed a femicide and/or became orphans due to the crime are insufficient.
The workshop is held in order to learn more about the situation across the EU and in specific Member States, about best practices and challenges, as well as what needs to be done in order to improve the situation.
