Chair's Welcome Words

Across the entire Europe, the cohesion and regional development policy proves continuously what Europe means and what it stands for: closer integration and true solidarity. Lately, however, the real proof of its success was disregarded, if not even eroded, by simplistic and frugal financial optimisation attempts.
Several challenges and disparities remain and only through a conscious, holistic and constructive reform process can they be rightfully addressed. We should not shy away from making bold reform proposals, while making sure that they are accompanied by an ambitious budget. When setting the parameters for the reform, we should take stock of the footmark left by current challenges across Europe's regions. The green and digital transition, climate change, migration, competitiveness and strategic autonomy, demographic challenges, national inequalities, economic stagnation and future enlargement waves.
Against such a backdrop, we need to be aware that, in any reform process, we need to safeguard the key pillars of our Cohesion Policy: shared management, multilevel governance, a place-based approach and the partnership principle. All these elements need to be doubled by a simplified implementation and a closer focus on good governance and capacity building to ensure effective investments.
It is clear that this legislature ahead of us will be extremely challenging. In this regard, I team up with all REGI members and Secretariat to properly defend the committee and its policy. I am confident that our dynamic and powerful group of Members is ready to take on any challenge that will come!
I'm looking forward to work with you in reinforcing our regions, strengthening our cohesion, and promoting true European solidarity!
