On 6 March 2025, the LIBE committee held an exchange of views on EU-Latin America cooperation on security matters and the role of parliamentary diplomacy, with the participation of the European Ϸվ’s Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Ϸվary Assembly (DLAT).

For this exchange of views, Members welcomed Xavier Aliaga, Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador, outgoing Presidency of the Latin American Committee on Internal Security (CLASI); Carolina Leitao Álvarez-Salamanca, Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, Ministry of the Interior and Public Security of Chile, incoming Presidency of CLASI; and Olivier Onidi, Deputy Director-General, Schengen & Internal Security, European Commission.

The debate focused on the need for the EU and Latin America to continue cooperation on threats such as organised crime, human trafficking, the international drug trade or cyber-crime. Ϸվ has worked closely with CLASI since its creation in March 2022.

Members discussed several matters with the Ecuadorian Ambassador, the Chilean Undersecretary and DG HOME's Deputy Director-General, including the European Ports Alliance, the root causes of drug trafficking and the exchange of personal data between Europol and Latin American authorities.
