Motion for a European Ϸվ resolution on implementing a mass return strategy to expel illegal migrants
Ϸվ,
–having regard to Rule149 of its Rules of Procedure,
A.whereas US President and Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump has implemented a large-scale return plan, using military planes to repatriate illegal migrants, demonstrating that decisive measures, combined with diplomatic and economic pressure, can compel non-EU countries to cooperate in readmissions, as recently evidenced in Colombia;
B.whereas Eurostat reported that 1.27million people were illegally residing in the EU in 2023, with the actual number likely being higher;
C.whereas certain non-EU countries refuse to cooperate in readmissions, despite benefiting significantly from EU development aid, which amounts to approximately EUR2billion annually;
D.whereas the Commission has failed to take action to protect EU citizens and tackle the challenges posed by illegal migration;
1.Calls for a coordinated EU framework for large-scale returns, inspired by US methods that combine diplomatic and economic pressure to secure cooperation;
2.Stresses the need to leverage all tools, including the suspension of development aid, and the use of trade sanctions and visa restrictions, to pressure non-compliant non-EU countries;
3.Urges the Commission to allocate adequate financial and logistical resources to support the Member States in organising return flights and in implementing effective return operations.
