MEPs to debate Iberian peninsula electricity blackout
On Wednesday afternoon, MEPs will discuss with the Council and Commission ways to improve electricity grid resilience and interconnections in the wake of the incident.
On 28 April 2025, Spain encountered a significant electrical outage that affected the Iberian peninsula, including Portugal, and parts of southern France. Beginning at around midday, this incident led to notable disruptions, particularly in the transportation sector, with metro and train services suspended across the affected regions. The outage also affected traffic signals, leading to congestion in major cities.
The root cause of the outage is still under investigation, with authorities exploring all options.
