International Trade committee members to visit Indonesia
From 14 to 16 April 2025, MEPs will travel to Indonesia to discuss political and trade relations as well as regional integration
A delegation of Members of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) and the Chair of the delegation for relations with Southeast Asia and ASEAN will travel to Indonesia from 14 to 16 April 2025 to discuss political, economic, trade and investment relations with the EU.
The mission aims to build upon recent progress in negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the EU and Indonesia and demonstrate the Ϸվ’s commitment to reaching a comprehensive agreement within the expected timeframe. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to address the EU's trade and economic relations with the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the implementation of the trade aspects of the relevant EU legislation, such as the Deforestation Regulation or the Renewable energy Directive. The delegation, led by the INTA Chair, Bernd LANGE (S&D, DE) will engage with representatives of the government of Indonesia, such as Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Investment, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, as well as with Members of Ϸվ and other relevant partners and stakeholders.
Mr Bernd LANGE stated: "The delegation of the European Ϸվ’s International Trade Committee to Indonesia aims at strengthening ties between reliable trading partners in a crucial moment of history. The current turbulences in global trade must be answered with a firm commitment to free and fair trade. We therefore travel to Indonesia to support the very advanced negotiations of an EU-Indonesia free trade agreement. Indonesia as the largest economy in ASEAN is a key partner for the EU and I really look forward to discussing a future deepening of our relationship.”
Mr Iuliu WINKLER (EPP, ROU), standing rapporteur for Indonesia commented: "In times of increased volatility of the global trading system, the complementarities between the economies of the EU and Indonesia make a Free Trade Agreement the best common way forward. Indonesia is already a very important partner of the EU; we must grasp the opportunity to bring our cooperation to the next level. The EU-Indonesia FTA will bring new market access, increasing reciprocal trade and investment, while promoting sustainable development. More important, the agreement will bring new jobs, more growth and increased security to the people of Europe and those of Indonesia."
