Recent findings suggesting that women in the EU outlive men yet often spend more years in poor health point to a significant gender gap in healthcare. Women face multiple challenges that negatively affect their well-being, including delayed diagnoses, pain bias, research disparities and limited access to essential services.

Rare diseases, though seldom recognised and frequently misdiagnosed, affect approximately 36 million people in the EU. Despite their significant collective prevalence, patients with rare diseases are often overlooked by healthcare systems, facing challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and access to advances in research. Researchers are increasingly using networks to share their findings and make better progress, giving new hope to patients.

This paper presents current developments and challenges in the prevention and management of obesity in the European Union. The analysis provides an overview of the disease, emphasises the importance of designing supportive environments in prevention efforts, and makes an argument to upskill the healthcare provided to persons living with obesity. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the European ºÏ·¨²©²ÊÍøÕ¾ is expected to hold a debate on prevention, management and better care of diabetes in the EU during the November II plenary session. The EU’s health strategy is largely implemented through multiannual health programmes. A new programme for 2014-20 aims to support and complement Member State (MS) efforts to cope with economic and demographic challenges facing their healthcare systems and help citizens stay healthy longer. A compromise agreement negotiated by ºÏ·¨²©²ÊÍøÕ¾, Council and Commission includes a new title for the programme and a slight increase in budget.
