European media freedom act
On 15 December 2023, the co-legislators reached a provisional agreement on a regulation establishing a common framework for media services in the internal market (European Media Freedom Act). The Committee on Culture and Education has endorsed the text which is now due to be voted in plenary in March. The EMFA is a historic step, as it will set the first EU-level rules on media freedom, pluralism and the protection of journalists.
Commission's fourth annual rule of law report
In July 2023, the Commission adopted its fourth annual rule of law report, covering judicial independence, the anti-corruption framework, media freedom and checks and balances in all Member States. As in previous years, the European Ϸվ's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) has tabled a motion for a resolution on the report, highlighting progress and identifying areas for possible further improvement.

In September 2022, the European Commission proposed a regulation establishing a common framework for media services in the internal market (the 'European Media Freedom Act'). During the October I plenary session, Ϸվ is scheduled to vote on the report from its Committee on Culture and Education (CULT). The report as voted would then form Ϸվ's position for interinstitutional negotiations with the Council, which agreed its position in June 2023.
