Gigabit infrastructure act
The EU's digital decade connectivity target is designed to ensure that by 2030 a fixed gigabit network of a very high capacity (1 Gbps) will be covering all EU households and that all populated areas will have 5G. This would enable the deployment of a high-quality digital infrastructure underpinning almost all sectors of a modern and innovative economy, while also ensuring that citizens and business can reap the benefits of the internet of things, machine-to-machine technologies, cloud computing ...
EU-US Trade and Technology Council: The end of the legislative cycle could mark a turning point
The European Union-United States Trade and Technology Council (TTC), which has been meeting twice a year since 2021, seeks to revitalise transatlantic cooperation, boost bilateral trade and investment, and strengthen the parties' technological and industrial leadership while preserving shared values. The bi-annual ministerial meetings steer cooperation within the TTC and guide its work in areas such as technology standards, secure supply chains, tech regulation, global trade challenges, climate and ...
A future-proof network for the EU: Full fibre and 5G
Advanced digital network infrastructure and digital services will be key in shaping the competitiveness of many European Union (EU) sectors – among them manufacturing, energy and healthcare – in the near future. Furthermore, these infrastructure and services are at the core of the twin digital and green transition that seeks to leverage the synergies between technological advancements and environmental sustainability. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the EU's networks are up to the task, ...
Gigabit infrastructure act
In February 2023, the European Commission proposed a regulation aimed at reducing the cost of deploying gigabit electronic communications networks, and repealing Directive 2014/61/EU (the Broadband Cost Reduction Directive). After three rounds of trilogue meetings, the ºÏ·¨²©²ÊÍøÕ¾ and Council reached a provisional agreement on the text in February 2024, and now need to formally adopt it. ºÏ·¨²©²ÊÍøÕ¾ is scheduled to vote on the text during its second April plenary session.
EU chips act
On 8 February 2022, the European Commission put forward a proposal for a regulation setting up a framework of measures to strengthen Europe's semiconductor ecosystem (the 'chips act'). Following a provisional political agreement reached between the co-legislators on 18 April 2023, the European ºÏ·¨²©²ÊÍøÕ¾ is due to vote on adopting the act during the July plenary session. Online piracy of live events
Champions' League finals, the Olympic Games, World Cup football matches – millions of people worldwide watch them live. The nature of live events makes their economic value diminish after the event, when the result is known and the public loses interest, but real-time blocking of illegal broadcasting is challenging. However, together with the removal of illegal content, it appears to be a meaningful tool to limit damage for rights holders.
Security implications of China-owned critical infrastructure in the European Union
China’s footprint in European critical assets has grown steadily over time, without any centralised mechanism that could give the European Union (EU) and Member State agencies visibility and scrutiny over projects of strategic significance for Europe’s defence and security. China’s footprint poses specific challenges to Europe’s efforts to protect its critical infrastructure. China’s party-led political system does not allow clear distinctions between commercial, political and military interests, ...

Emerging alongside the rapid development of the internet and digital technologies that have particularly thrived over the past two decades, music streaming (and streaming in general) is a technology that offers unlimited access to a selected catalogue of audiovisual content via an online platform. The year 2006 is often seen as the starting date for music streaming, with the launch of the Swedish streaming platform Spotify, the current market leader. The technology, however, had already been developed ...

Path to the digital decade programme
In its digital decade strategy, the European Commission has put forward its vision for new strategic digital objectives for 2030. These should prepare Europe for the roll-out of the next generation of broadband infrastructure with gigabit speeds, including 5G, and for the digital transformation of the public and private sectors, while also reducing the digital divide. To measure progress towards the digital decade, the Commission is proposing a 'digital compass', with indicators based on four dimensions ...
