Join the Sakharov centenary debate with 2014 laureate Dr Denis Mukwege
To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Andrei Sakharov鈥檚 birth, Heidi Hautala, Vice-President responsible for the Sakharov Prize Community, is hosting 2014 Sakharov Prize laureate Dr Denis Mukwege and Maria Arena, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, for a debate on the fight against impunity in the DRC on Friday, 21 May, 13:00-14:00.
Since 1999, world-renowned Congolese gynaecologist Dr Denis Mukwege, has been fearless in his efforts to heal survivors of sexual violence in DRC and to advocate for ending the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. "There will be no peace in DRC until the reign of impunity ends", he stated at the launch of his petition in October 2020, calling for transitional justice in his country.
On 21 May 1921, Russian nuclear physicist, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and human rights activist Andrei Sakharov was born in Moscow. 100 years later, his life remains an example of intellectual freedom and inspires those who defend humanity and promote universal human rights worldwide.
